STEPHEN WARBECK
ENGLISH VERSION
Brighton, South coast of England, in the 68's.
Not far from his hometown Southampton, the young Stephen answered his wanderlust ; in all generational logic, the teenager gave up for a while his long studies of classical music for Rock'Roll ; he became co-leader with Paul Bradley of the "Kippers" band which he himself described as "crazy and anarchist", then the most serious "Metropolitan Water Board".
A little full of "tours", Stephen Warbeck began studying theatre and French at Bristol University. The apprentice actor will also be the official composer of university shows, and it was in 1985 that he began a professional career as a composer for the most prestigious English stages such as the National Theatre or Shakespeare's Globe Theatre. Many of the plays he collaborates on will be the subject of remarkable adaptations for television, particularly for the BBC, bringing together actors such as Emma Thompson and Anthony Hopkins.
Throughout his career, Stephen Warbeck will remain very attached to the composition for the theatre and in 2013, this love will be rewarded with a BAFTA Award for his score of Henry IV, parts 1 & 2 by Richard Eyre.
In 1998, Stephen Warbeck had already written some film music for film and television, but it was once again the Theatre that would bring him, by ricochet, an international acclaim in the 7th Art: the British composer won the Oscar for his score of Shakespeare In Love by director John Madden, which he would find on Proof and Capitaine Corelli. Projects have since followed one another, such as Billy Elliot, Killing Bono, Charlotte Gray ... and more recently Richard Eyre's Children Act with Emma Thompson and Stanley Tucci, Joel Hopkins' Hampstead with Diane Keaton and Brendan Gleeson, Nick Hamm's The Journey with Timothy Spall and Colm Meaney.
Passionate about French culture, Stephen handles Molière's language perfectly and regularly crosses the English Channel to collaborate with Maïwenn Le Besco ( Mon Roi, Polisse, ADN, Jeanne Du Barry), Jean-Jacques Annaud ( Deux Frères ), Nicole Garcia ( Un Balcon Sur La Mer ), Nabil Ben Yadir ( La Marche )...
In 2019, Stephen Warbeck wrote and directed his first film The Man In the Hat for which he obviously wrote the music. The film is a singular and poetic road movie, shot in his adopted French region, the Cévennes. It brings together Ciaràn Hinds and Maïwenn Le Besco, among others.
These comings and goings from one country to another, from the stage to the stage, enrich a talent that is eager to continue to flourish in the diversity of languages and encounters.
